I often use abstract painting to "reset" or cleanse my techniques, especially after a series of realistic, representational, or detail focused works. I am not an abstract painter as this is a level of artistry and craftsmanship unto itself, requiring years of commitment, skill, and inspiration. A landscape painting is, in essence, a story. Each landscape I paint tells a story of some dramatic interaction between the viewer and the view. I work to draw out a tension between colors and light and an internal tension of space and direction. A good landscape is like a mirror we hold up before ourself, we look into the world before us and find ourselves portrayed in nature.
